Located in the Berkshire countryside just a short distance from the town centre, Newbury Racecourse is one of Britain’s most respected all-round racecourses, known for combining top-class racing with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere. Opened in 1905, the venue has built a strong reputation across both Flat and jump racing, regularly attracting elite trainers, jockeys and horses throughout the year without ever feeling overly flashy or intimidating.
The course itself is a wide, galloping track with long straights that tend to favour strong finishers and fair competition. Unlike some tighter or more unusual racecourses, Newbury is often seen as a straightforward test of quality – although that doesn’t make it any easier to win on as the competition is huge. Its modern facilities and spacious layout also make it popular with racegoers looking for a comfortable day out, whether they are seasoned racing fans or simply there for the social side and a glass of something cold in the sunshine.
Some of Newbury’s biggest races include:
- The Lockinge Stakes (Flat)
- The London Gold Cup (Flat)
- The Hungerford Stakes (Flat)
- The Coral Gold Cup (Jumps)
- The Denman Chase (Jumps)
Away from racing, Newbury Racecourse is a major events venue for the South of England. The site regularly hosts live music performances, conferences, exhibitions, weddings, Christmas parties and family entertainment events throughout the year. Its large grandstands, hospitality suites and open grounds make it well suited to everything from corporate functions to outdoor festivals, helping keep the venue lively even when the horses have gone home for the day.
