Nestled between the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales, Thirsk Racecourse has been at the heart of Yorkshire racing for well over 150 years. Located on the edge of the traditional market town made famous by author and veterinarian James Herriot, the venue combines a relaxed countryside setting with a reputation for competitive Flat racing.
Racing takes place exclusively on the Flat from spring through to the autumn. The left-handed track is generally considered fair, featuring long sweeping bends and a home straight that gives horses every chance to challenge. Unlike some of Britain’s more idiosyncratic courses, Thirsk rarely produces many hard-luck stories, making it a venue where class and race tactics often come to the fore.
Thirsk has earned a strong reputation for creating an enjoyable race day experience, with Ladies’ Day, family fixtures and evening meetings among the highlights of the calendar. The racecourse also plays an important role beyond the sport, hosting weddings, conferences, charity events and corporate hospitality throughout the year. Its modern facilities have been developed carefully, allowing the venue to grow while preserving the friendly atmosphere that has become one of its defining characteristics.
For many racegoers, Thirsk represents traditional Yorkshire racing at its best. Competitive action on the track, excellent viewing opportunities and a warm welcome off it have helped the racecourse remain a firm favourite with both local supporters and visitors from further afield.
