Cartmel Racecourse is unlike anywhere else in British racing. Nestled on the edge of the Lake District in the picturesque Cumbrian village of Cartmel, it combines competitive jumps action with the feel of a country festival. The setting alone makes it one of the most scenic racecourses in the UK, with thousands of racegoers flocking to the village each summer to enjoy a day that is as much about the atmosphere as it is the racing.
Racing has been staged at Cartmel since the mid-1800’s century, although local folklore suggests horses, and even monks riding mules, were competing across these fields centuries earlier.
Cartmel stages exclusively National Hunt racing, with a compact left-handed circuit that is regarded as one of the quirkiest in the country. The track features Britain’s longest steeplechase run-in, giving hold-up horses every chance to reel in the leaders after the final fence and producing some thrilling finishes. The racecourse hosts a select programme of fixtures between late May and August, but every meeting feels like a major occasion.
Away from the action on the track, Cartmel has built a reputation as one of racing’s great social occasions. Visitors are encouraged to picnic in the centre of the course, live entertainment and family activities add to the carnival atmosphere, and the village itself is famous for its pubs, independent shops, and private celebrations and community events also feature throughout the year.
