One of the hidden gems of British jumps racing is undoubtedly Plumpton. Set at the foot of the South Downs in the Sussex countryside, it offers a traditional racecourse experience with a relaxed, friendly atmosphere that has changed little over the decades.
Racing at Plumpton is exclusively over jumps, with meetings taking place from autumn through to spring. The left-handed circuit is relatively sharp and places a premium on accurate jumping, particularly in steadily run contests where track position can be crucial. The Sussex National is the racecourse’s biggest annual feature, attracting seasoned staying chasers and providing one of the highlights of the southern jumps season.
Plumpton may be compact in size, but it delivers an authentic racing experience that continues to win plenty of admirers. Its combination of challenging jump racing, scenic surroundings and friendly atmosphere makes it a favourite among National Hunt enthusiasts, while its location within easy reach of Brighton and the South Coast ensures it remains an important part of Sussex’s sporting calendar.
Unlike many modern sporting venues, Plumpton has retained a distinctly community feel. Race days are popular with local residents, students from nearby universities and visitors looking for a more traditional day at the races. Family fixtures, themed events and hospitality packages add to the appeal, while the venue also welcomes conferences, weddings, private celebrations and corporate functions throughout the year.
