Ripon Racecourse proudly bills itself as “Yorkshire’s Garden Racecourse”, a title that perfectly reflects its attractive surroundings and atmosphere. Situated on the outskirts of the historic cathedral city of Ripon in North Yorkshire, the venue has been staging organised racing for well over 300 years.
Racing is exclusively on the Flat between spring and early autumn. The left-handed, oval circuit is renowned for its undulating nature, while the uphill finish can prove more demanding than it first appears. Horses that travel strongly and see out the final climb often have the edge, and jockeys need to time their challenge carefully rather than committing too early.
One of the highlights of the racing calendar is the Great St Wilfrid Handicap, one of Britain’s best-known sprint races, which regularly attracts competitive fields from leading northern stables. The course also stages a number of Listed races and popular summer meetings, with Ladies’ Day proving one of the biggest social occasions of the season. Evening fixtures are another firm favourite, combining quality racing with a relaxed, family-friendly atmosphere.
Ripon has invested significantly in its facilities over recent years, ensuring it remains a popular destination away from racing too. Weddings, conferences, business events and private celebrations are hosted throughout the year, while its landscaped gardens and excellent hospitality have become a major draw in their own right. Combining history, character and competitive racing, Ripon continues to rank among the finest boutique racecourses anywhere in Britain.
